Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
