Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
