Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical biological terror, but within Together exists a intense examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
